Getting to know Kitsilano

a house in Kitsilano

Coming to Vancouver? Want to learn a bit more about Kitsilano? Here are some links.

A webcam view from a rooftop on Kitsilano. Also contains a link to a gallery of fabulous Vancouver images.

A list of Kitsilano restaurants

A history of Kitsilano. Interesting information; however, it only starts with Caucasian settlements. Of course, the area was settled much earlier by Squamish First Nations, and is named after a family of chiefs. The Squamish name for Kitsilano is Xats’alanexw.

The Kitsilano Yacht Club. It was founded in 1934 and over the years the Club has developed into an exciting venue for one-design sailing. Kits Yacht Club is home to active one-design fleets including the Star, 505, Lightning, Martin 242, and Pirate classes. It also has a number of kayaks and paddlers.

Kitsilano’s Farmer’s market

Kitsilano Beach has lots of attractions. Besides the beach, the park, the water, the ocean and mountain views, this is what you get:

  • Connection to the Seaside Seawall system
    Concession stands
The Watermark on Kits Beach Restaurant
    Oceanside heated outdoor pool
    Tennis courts
Basketball courts (and semi-official beach volleyball courts)
Lifeguarded Victoria Day (late May) to Labour Day (early September)
… and, last not least, the Planetarium

After you’ve spent a long day walking around the park, I’d recommend you top it off with a visit to Videomatica, one of Canada’s best video stores.

The New Rental Market

We’ve been talking about the changes in the market and the need for rental reductions to reflect this situation. Here’s an example.

Some recent Kitsilano Heritage house short term tenants have just rented a one bedroom apartment fully furnished (for long term) and equipped on the 23rd floor of a fairly new building close to the Beach Crescent neighbourhood in downtown. The suite has sweeping views etc. for $1600 a month utilities included!

This price is indicative of where the market is returning to.
